The History of the Urbino Institute
The ministerial decree of August 19, 1955, established a Subsection of the State Archives in Urbino, later transformed into a Section of the State Archives by ministerial decree of July 10, 1965. Located since its inception in two unsuitable rooms of the Ducal Palace, home to the notarial archives, the institute moved to the first floor of Palazzo Corboli in June 1978. Since 2007, it has been located on Piano Santa Lucia, occupying part of the Giovanni Pascoli school complex.
Unlike the Fano Section, the archive that formed the nucleus around which the other collections were gathered was not the municipal archive, which had been deposited at the university library for several decades and inventoried there, but the notarial archive.
The section lacks its oldest material. The archives of the Dukes of Urbino are currently held in the State Archives of Pesaro (see Duchy of Urbino), the State Archives of Florence (see Diplomatic, Acquired Seigneurial Archives, Duchy of Urbino), and the Vatican Archives. Another serious loss is that of the archives of the Urbino Rota Tribunal, of which, with the exception of 40 envelopes (1548-1841) preserved in the University Library in the Historical Archives of the University, nothing remains.
Religious corporation papers are held, among other places, in the Ancona Archives (see Convent of the Nuns of San Benedetto and Venerable Monastery of the Nuns of Santa Maria Maddalena) and in the Gubbio Archives (Monastery of Sant'Angelo di Gaifa), and a core of documents relating to the Urbino area are held in the Rimini State Archives (see Documents of the Urbino area). Notarial deeds are in the Florence Archives, Notarial Archives.
With the establishment of the Urbino Archives Center, the Historical Archives of the Court, the Municipal Archives, with the exception of the ancient collection held at the University Library, and the Historical Archives of the IRAB (United Institutions of Assistance and Charity) were deposited at the Historical Archives of the Court, the Historical Archives of the Municipality, and the Historical Archives of the IRAB (United Institutions of Assistance and Charity).
